Jered Weaver, with Contract Extension, Proves He's a Class Act

Jered Weaver is the ace of the Angels of Anaheim's starting rotation. The pitcher has been said to be worth well over $100 million for the next five years, and with free agency at the end of the year, expectations were that Boston or New York might snatch him up.

A longtime baseball enthusiast, I spend a lot of time talking baseball with my fellow baseball fan friends. One thing we tend to talk about often is how the era of class acts like Cal Ripken, Tony Gwynn, and Tim Salmon, players that spend their career with one team and make less money because their love of the game is worth more than that superstar contract, is over. Then, here comes Jered Weaver with his contract extension and incredible press conference regarding his decision.

The Angels, and Weaver, agreed on a five year contract extension worth $85 million. When asked by the press about leaving money on the table, Jered asked how much does he need? More important to the Angels pitcher is loyalty, love of the game, and the push for a championship on a team he loves to play for.

Teamwork, treating the fans right, family, and attitude. . . the things I like about the Angels just got a bigger boost. The Angels will respond to Weaver's actions, which means Texas better start looking in the rear view mirror. . . Anaheim is on their tail for the division crown.
